Norwegian Modern: Edvard Munch and Gustav Vigeland

It is astonishing that a country once as sparsely populated and economically and culturally backward as Norway, only becoming a nation state in 1905, should have had such an important impact on early modern culture. To a greater degree than almost any artists of their time, Ibsen and Munch had their finger on the pulse of modern life and sensibility. In this talk we look at the work of Munch and of his contemporary Gustav Vigeland, an artist less known internationally but whose sculpture park proves a revelation to visitors to Oslo.
