Dr Hilary Pomeroy
Great Jewish Cities: Sarajevo

Thursday 7.05.2026

How to watch

This lecture starts on 7 May at 7:00pm (UK).

Summary

In this lecture we look at how Jews thrived for hundreds of years in a Muslim city. In 1941, most of the Jewish community was killed during the Nazi occupation. Years later, during the siege of Sarajevo in the 1992 Bosnian War, the only remaining synagogue served as a safe haven for Muslims, Christians, and Jews while the city was under bombardment.
