Summary

In what Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) termed his “galley years” between 1839 and 1850, the legendary composer created no less than 16 operas. International success followed the Milan premiere of Nabucco in 1842 with its great lament for the Jewish people, "Va, pensiero,” that has become the unofficial national anthem for Italy.
