Summary

This presentation takes a deep dive into European expansion and dominance from the 15th to the 20th centuries, beginning with Portugal and Spain and moving on to England (later Britain) and France. At the start of this imperial age, Europeans spread across Asia and South and North America, as well as parts of coastal Africa. This lecture will set up a subsequent lecture on the Golden Age of Empires.

William Tyler has spent his entire professional life in adult education, beginning at Kingsgate College in 1969. He has lectured widely for many public bodies, including the University of Cambridge and the WEA, in addition to speaking to many clubs and societies. In 2009, William was awarded the MBE for services to adult education, and he has previously been a scholar in residence at the London Jewish Cultural Centre.
