How to watch

This lecture starts on 14 April at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

In the early Middle Ages, Islam spread from North Africa via Gibraltar and into Spain, even into Southern France. It remained in Spain until the Reconquista finally won in 1492. The threat on Europe’s eastern front wasn’t halted until 1683 at Vienna. Today Islam remains in Albania, Kosovo, and European Turkey. In this lecture we will consider the political significance of Islam’s presence in Europe.
