How to watch

This lecture starts on 23 September at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

Often called “Black Spartacus,” Toussaint Louverture (1743–1803), led the only successful slave rebellion in history. In 1791, slaves revolted in Saint-Domingue, the French part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Caught up in European wars against revolutionary France, Louverture had a difficult political as well as military path to follow before the newly named Haiti declared independence in 1804, months after Toussaint’s own death while in custody in France.
