Representations of Jews in the Films of the ‘70s
Summary
The floodgates opened for films exploring Jewish themes in the ‘70s and ‘80s with two of the greatest musicals of all time “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Cabaret.” This paved the way for director Joan Micklin Silver’s beautifully crafted “Hester Street” and “Crossing Delancey” along with Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,” “The Front,” and his take on assimilation, “Zelig.” Trudy Gold discusses how these films explored American Jewish identity and the increase in films that attempted to bring aspects of the Shoah to the screen.
