Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal
Summary
The 1930s was the decade of the Great Depression, the economic downturn that affected so many in the US and beyond. Franklin D. Roosevelt, elected President in 1932, took his predecessor’s cautious policy of federal interventionism to unprecedented levels with the launch of his famous New Deal. This lecture asks, did the Depression end as a result of the actions taken by President Roosevelt, or was it the war in Europe, which was itself a major consequence of the economic meltdown in Germany?
William Tyler
William Tyler has spent his entire professional life in adult education, beginning at Kingsgate College in 1969. He has lectured widely for many public bodies, including the University of Cambridge and the WEA, in addition to speaking to many clubs and societies. In 2009, William was awarded the MBE for services to adult education, and he has previously been a scholar in residence at the London Jewish Cultural Centre.
